Abstract

Nowadays, many lecturers use various tools to support the online learning process, such as Moodle, Schoology, Edmodo, and Google Classroom. This study focuses on exploring the undergraduate students’ perceptions of Google Classroom’s implementation in online English Learning. With the case study design, seven undergraduate students from English Education Department in Wiralodra University participated in this study. The questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data, and both of them were analyzed qualitatively. The study results revealed that in terms of implementation, the Google Classroom application is an application that is easy to use, less effective in material explanation, and effective in the technic of administration and material management. Then, this study showed some positive impacts of the Google Classroom application. First, Google Classroom can record an effort of learning, material and assignment. The second, it provides quick access to collect an assignment, and The last, it minimizes the cost of learning. However, this study also revealed some negative impacts, such as trouble with an internet connection speed and screen display of google classroom. So, from the result of the study, it can be concluded that Google Classroom can be one of the application choices in teaching undergraduate students.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the multimodal analysis of the DisneyPlus Hotstar Indonesia TV Advertisement. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. This research data are text, symbols, images, sounds, and gestures used in DisneyPlus Hotstar Indonesia TV advertisements. The data were obtained from the DisneyPlus Hotstar Indonesia TV advertisement. Besides, the famous tagline from this advertisement is “Pilih Semaumu, Untuk Semua” (Choose all you want, for all). The results show that DisneyPlus Hotstar Indonesia TV advertisement has a multimodal semiotic system consisting of linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial elements. Each multimodal semiotic system is closely related to constructing advertising meaning. The message is understandable for the audience. Moreover, this research is expected to contribute to developing the discourse analysis discipline, especially multimodal analysis.

Abstract

This research attempts to reveal the social stratification depicted in the short story entitled ‘The Doll’s House’ by Katherine Mansfield. Qualitative research design with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach is applied to achieve the research goal. This research focuses on the points of Social Structure, Field, Doxa, Capitals, and Struggle of Pierre Bourdieu. The theme and characters’ interaction will be dissected using the five elements mentioned. In regard to social structure, the finding shows that The Burnell’s family is undoubtedly rich while The Kelvey’s family is poor. The Burnells mingle with other rich people only. They treat lower-class people arbitrarily, that even their new doll’s house is not open for marginalized group. The social fields of this story are Burnell’s house where the interaction between upper-class people takes place, and the school where children with various status levels associate. Meanwhile, the doxas found are the oldest child has more privileges in family, people tend to befriend with those coming from the same social class, and lower-class people are more likely to speak using non-standard English. The Burnell’s daughters and their allies palpably possess economic, cultural, and social capitals. The Kelveys, on the other hand, lack it all. Lastly, the struggles are experienced by Isabel, Kezia, and little Kelveys in obviously different extent.

Abstract

This study investigated students' perceptions, students' attitudes, and students' main reasons for supporting first language use in the EFL classroom. A qualitative approach with a holistic-single case study design was applied, and the instruments were a Questionnaire and interview session. The participants were 22 students of grade XI from the Social Program at the MAN 1 Indramayu. The participants answered questions administered through 29 questionnaire statements and eight interview questions. The result showed that (1) the students rarely speak English during English learning in the EFL classroom, (2) The students strongly agree if the teacher uses First Language (L1) when explaining something complicated, like grammar or unfamiliar vocabulary. (3) The students' main reason that the students did not understand and still have doubts about some vocabulary. The interview result indicated that first Language (L1) is still needed in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

There are a lot of factors determining the success of learning process. Leaning media is one of them that can contribute to the excellent learning process. In this digital era, infographic either digital or printed is regarded as a suitable media for speaking as it is able to help students to present effectively. The combination of brief information in points and graphics helps the students in delivering particular topics to the audience that also develops the students’ speaking skill. The infographic in this research was conducted in projects for mechanical engineering students. The topic chosen for the research was ‘describing the excellence of a city’. It is one of the topics written in the curriculum for English 1 subject. The research applied a case study in which the data collection was gathered using observation, interview, and questionnaires. The results indicated that the infographic project could facilitate the speaking activities. The students showed positive responses in creating infographic, working in group project-based learning (PBL), and presenting the infographic content.  These conditions indicate that the infographic project was successfully employed to facilitate the students’ speaking activity.

Abstract

Gender bias is a problematic issue until today. World has been accepted and convinced that gender is socially constructed, but society grows with a confusion of gender bias that leads to an endless feminist movement. A case on gender discrimination occurs in Pakistan, where inequality needs attention as it has been intersected with cultural and political practices. This seems to restrict any effort regarded to equality. This research aims to identify manifestations of gender discrimination experienced by the main character in Amal Unbound and to analyze aspects of cultural and political matters related to the restriction of Pakistan women. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method in the analysis. The data were analyzed by using Butler's concepts on gender. The findings indicate that the main character experienced various manifestations of gender discrimination, such as marginalization, subordination, stereotype, and violence. She has been in a worse condition as being restricted by practices of constructed culture and politics in Pakistan.

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate how Question-Answer Relationships (QAR) through Google Classroom (GC) develop the vocational school students’ reading skill and expose the benefits of its implementation. QAR through GC was expected to fulfil the students’ need, especially improving their reading skill. The data were collected by test, observation, interview, and questionnaire. The subjects of the study are the tenth graders of one state and three private vocational schools in Yogyakarta. The study employed classroom action research (CAR) consisted of two cycles included four steps: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. In the first cycle, the mean score of pre-test was 58.58. However, in the second cycle, the mean score of post-test was 69.85. The gain score between tests was 11.27, and the t score was - 3.72 (p-value < 0.05). This proved that Question-Answer Relationship through Google Classroom was effective to teach reading. In addition, the study revealed three advantages of implementing QAR through GC such as conducting interesting and safe medium online learning, helping students to discuss the material, and engaging the students’ motivation in learning reading.

Abstract

The Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture has instructed schools to carry out online learning since March 17, 2020 along with widespread COVID-19. Among all online learning media, YouTube has become increasingly popular for learning tools, especially with young adults. Thus, this research tried to investigate the students’ perception of using YouTube in the study of English skills class. The qualitative approach with case study design was implemented to six undergraduate students of the 3rd semester who voluntarily participated in this research. The instruments used in this research are questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed descriptively to answer the research question. The finding reported that YouTube videos make students happy to learn English; it helps them understand the material. However, youtube makes communication with lecturers and classmates difficult without Whatsapp. In terms of strengths and weaknesses, Youtube can keep the students from feeling bored; they can study anytime and anywhere, they can also re-watch the video at will. However, YouTube videos can be a poor learning media if the videos are too long. Youtube is considered expensive without Wi-Fi access. Then the last is the possibility of signal interference.

Abstract

The English skills for the nursing students in Indonesian Higher Education need to be prepared to be able to increase the English communication skills and to avoid miscommunication and malpractice. English in Indonesia is regarded as Foreign Language, so it is not surprising if many nurses still have low English skills. Managing “English for Nursing” (EfN) course in higher education should be constructed with effective approaches one of which is constructivism. Constructivism in EfN is better conducted with some techniques including the use of technology, flash cards /situation cards, real medical tools, and forms. Hence, the students will understand the contextual situation and can construct the appropriate expressions. The implementation of the constructivist uses in EfN classes must be adjusted with the students’ level to achieve the purpose.

Abstract

This paper discusses the difficulties faced by hotelier students of STIPARY. From both observation and interview, this study reveals that all students encountered various difficulties in English speaking ability. The prevalent problem faced by the students was ‘lack of vocabulary’, while ‘being afraid of making mistakes’ was the prime cause of problem which hindered them to speak. The students had striven to cope with their problems in learning speaking, but their attempts had not been yet ample and successful.
